What to expect
HidePhotography Inc. is building wildlife photography hides around the world, offering the highest quality photography services and creating the world’s first chain of quality-standardized wildlife photography hides. The interior comfort of our hides is unparalleled, the locations are selected to enable you to photograph the most species and the highest quality images within the shortest period of time, the growing network enables you to keep adding new destinations and species to your list, and our engineers make sure that all of the above happens the way that you leave the least possible environmental impact behind. Using HidePhotography Inc. hides, you will be able to take professional-quality images of hundreds of species within a single year!
Our goal is to provide you with access to some of the most remote and isolated regions on the earth and the opportunity to photograph wildlife phenomena that occur there. We will bring the most colorful and amazing wildlife in front of your lenses all around the world, and cater for all your other needs, leaving you with nothing else to care about but the quality of images you take!

The wildlife photography product that HidePhotography Inc. offers may take you to some remote and undeveloped regions of the world, and into some of the most rural areas of developed countries. We strive to utilize the best accommodation, transportation and services for our guests, however, certain destinations lack the infrastructure and comfort most westerners are accustomed to. Still, the benefits of traveling to such isolated areas will enable participants to photograph wildlife spectacles that few will ever experience in their lifetime.
Travel to these destinations can often times be long and arduous, requiring extended periods of transport over unpaved bumpy roads, or boat rides that necessitate sitting for an extended duration. Accommodations are usually simple, but clean and comfortable nature lodges.
All meals are generally included, and we will do our best to accommodate those with special dietary needs. Photography excursions can and do require modest to large amounts of physical exertion. Participants in our photography activities must be fully mobile, able to hike one kilometer a day or walk for one hour in sun, or in high humidity environment while carrying a backpack with full camera gear and water.

Our prices are all inclusive and good for 24 hours when you utilize our services. Our prices include: unlimited usage of the hides, accommodation, three meals a day, and a local guide who will give you information and instructions about the location, rules and use of the hides, upon your arrival.
Our prices exclude transportation from the capital airports to the location of our hides, but at every single location, we provide you with the transfer services at a price. Please request the transfer services when booking on our website.
Our prices also exclude international travel expenses and all personal expenses, like: visa fees, drinks, insurance, at the accommodation laundry, telephone, and bar expenses, departure taxes and all other items not immediately related to our services.

Hide Usage Rules
Every and each HidePhotography Inc. hide has its own rules, clearly described on our website, by the local guide and by a booklet located inside the hide.
However, in general, our guests are kindly requested to keep the following common rules:
  • Keep the hides clean! Please bring a pair of indoor shoes with you, because in most hides it is mandatory to have one with you. Please leave your outdoor shoes outside, at the designated location. There is equipment in each hide for cleaning the floor. Please use them extensively when necessary, and leave the hides behind the way you would want to receive them upon your arrival.

  • Cooperate with your fellow photographers! If you are using the hide together with other photographers, please make sure you don’t disturb each other’s work. Plan your arrival and departure time in advance and inform all of your fellow photographers about your plans.

  • Fully respect the wildlife! Do not make any noise that disturb wildlife, do not feed wildlife with anything else than organized and provided by HidePhotography, and do not try to approach any species outside of the hide.

  • The windows fog up easily! If you approach the hides in rain, please leave your raincoat and all of your wet cloths outside, because the fog will condense on the window glass immediately. If the glass fogs up, please wait until it evaporates on its own, do not attempt to clean it off.

  • Do not clean the window glass! The special glass has a very sensitive surface, cleaning it is exclusively the duty of your local guide. If you aren’t satisfied with its cleanness, please ask your guide for immediate help.

  • Be careful with insect repellent! If you use insect repellent in the hides, please make sure you never spray it towards the window glass.

  • Keep quiet! Many species won’t be bothered by your quiet talking and the noise the cameras make, while others are so skittish that even the slightest noise will scare them away. To enhance your productivity and success, minimize your movement and any source of noise inside the hide. Once an animal arrives in front of the hide, we suggest you do not start immediate continuous shooting. Take a few images and watch the animal’s reaction.

  • Do not smoke! Smoking will not only disturb wildlife and your fellow photographers, but will also pose a serious fire hazard to the hides, which are often constructed of dry wood. According to our indemnity form (see below), you are fully liable for any damages caused by smoking.

  • The hide’s surrounding isn’t a toilet! Many species, especially mammals are very sensitive to the smell of humans. If you use the hides’ surrounding for toiletry purposes, you may keep certain species away for several days.

  • The obscure glass doesn’t make you invisible! The special glass we use will disable the animals from seeing you, under ideal circumstances. However, in case you move a light colored object (like a face, a hand, a Canon lens, cleaning tissues etc) inside the hide, less than 50cm (2 feet) away from the glass, the animals can easily become skittish and alert. This is especially true when shooting in backlit, with the sunlight hitting the glass. In this latter case you have to use the dark curtains, as well.

  • Help our work! In case you see any abnormalities in our hides, please report it to us immediately at reservations@hidephotography.com, so that we can take instant action. You are welcome to give us any suggestions and share any experiences that we can use in order to make the hides even better.

Attracting animals
Attracting animals is an awe-inspiring activity that requires a good level of biological knowledge, a complete understanding of the location’s ecology, lots of patience, inventiveness and environmental sensitivity.
Generally speaking, attracting animals can be done absolutely right and absolutely wrong. This is why we emphasize on the importance of extensive research and study, before deciding to attract animals. The tradition of attracting wild birds into our gardens has thousands of years of history, and through simple observations, we have learned some basic rules. Scientific, biological research through recent decades has also shown additional useful information. In a nutshell, attracting animals is done correctly when it is harmless to the subject’s health or actually improves it. Also, the attraction should not increase exposure to predation, largely change natural behavior, or change the long-term conditions of the local population.

At Hidephotography, our work is relatively easy, taken that our main focus is birds. Birds are easier to attract than most other animals and much less prone to chronic changes in behavior. One of the main reasons behind this is that birds are not inclined towards obesity. For example, even when presented with an abundance of food considered to be a favorite (think of a fruiting tree or the hanging suet feeder in your backyard), birds only consumer what is required for their daily intake or for rearing their chicks. Thus, providing unlimited sources of birdseed in your garden through the winter carries no harm for our beloved birds.

Given that birds can fly, it is best and a great deal easier to attract them to locations where they are safe from predators. With proper placement in your garden you can safely keep them from squirrels, fox, raccoons or birds of prey. The same general rules apply when you are attracting avian species in the wild, within their local habitat. Once we have ensured that they are safe, the next important step is to make sure they receive the correct food or another biologically and ecologically correct attraction. In terms of food, supplying them with material they are not used to, can change their metabolism and can eventually make them ill. It is extremely important to provide food that can be found in their natural environment or in a neighboring human environment that they are likely to visit. An example of a poor nutritional item that is often mistakenly and incorrectly offered to garden birds is breadcrumbs or salted fat. Bread, just like almost all other cooked, spiced, salted kitchen leftovers consumed in any amount, can cause serious digestive problems. Also, these items can also attract other unwanted species such as rats and other predators. Feeding these items should be avoided at all times.

Salted meals, in general, seriously increase the water needs and water intake of the birds, changing their metabolism or in severe cases lead to death. Controversially, most birds’ natural diet is short in mineral salts and they (just like parrots in the Amazon region) often fly large distances to mineral sources. Consequently, a mineral salt lick can be a great attraction for birds. But it is crucial to understand that it has to be supplied separately from their food source. They food should not contain any added substrate, such as spices, because these are unnatural for them and cause metabolic problems. By supplying the salt lick separately, they will consume exactly as much as the metabolic rates of each species determine.

The best natural attraction for birds however is water. Almost all species drink several times a day, so this is something they require in their immediate surrounding, and will often visit. Fortunately, when providing a temporary water source as an attraction it is also virtually impossible to disrupt the natural ecology of birds. Birds often have to travel large distances for their water source, only to take water from a dangerous environment (like river banks with crocodiles in it), so providing safe and well-placed temporary drinking pools will supply them with this necessity, positively affect their lives, without altering their daily behavior.

Another issue to be taken into consideration when creating an attraction is access, particularly with a food source. If their food source is too easily accessed and absolutely continuous, they might largely adjust their daily activities by refusing to move too far from the food source. Thus, it is extremely important not to provide all they need at one location (i.e. don’t supply water, salt licks and natural food at the same time and the same place). Also, the food source should not be available all day, and even more so, for the entire calendar year. Another consideration is that most birds don’t enjoy a mono-diet (only one type of food), so by providing a single diet staple, you can ensure this food source is only integrated into their daily program for a few stopovers, then they continue their natural behavior by searching for other food sources in the wild. Finally, as an important addition, if you would like to see or take pictures of the birds visiting an attraction, it is extremely important to remain inconspicuous so as to not habituate them to human beings and possibly exposing them unnecessarily to human threats later in their lives.

As a conclusion, we express our belief that when attracting birds with the proper knowledge and knowhow, one can positively contribute to maintaining a healthy and viable bird population, which in turn can create an improvement for the surrounding ecosystem. In every corner of the world, birds are facing a decline in their natural habitat, reductions in natural food sources, and a serious population decline associated with human development (feral cats, chemicals, hunters, diseases, traffic etc). Under these challenging circumstances, any and all help, when properly managed, can improve the situation. To achieve all this, we strongly keep the following guidelines when establishing a Hidephotography station:
  • We build our hides in the birds’ natural habitat, so we do not encourage them to leave their natural environment and change their behavior.

  • We keep strict hide-usage rules, so birds do not get used to seeing humans and don’t change their behavior towards them.

  • Whenever available, we build our hides at natural attractions (i.e. fruiting trees, watering holes, etc), so we do not need to provide additional attractions.

  • As long as possible, we attempt to use water and salt licks as attractions, which are the safest and usually produce the best results.

  • When providing food, we make sure it is clean, healthy and contains absolutely natural substances only.

  • None of our hides operate all year round; so entire bird populations are unable to change their habits and structure based on an unlimited source, keeping the natural way of life, by constantly adjusting to naturally changing food and water resources.
